Description: Offered by Over The Blue Horizon and recently obtained in Tokyo is a vintage (1978) MARU MECHANIC on the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) Aichi E13A Reconnaissance Seaplane better known in the West as the JAKE. Used by the IJN for the duration of the war, it was numerically its most important seaplane. With a crew of three and a bomb load of 550 lbs, the proper IJN designation was Type Zero Reconnaissance Seaplane. It saw its initial service in China operating from cruisers, and JAKEs participated in the Pearl Harbor attack during which they overflew Oahu and Maui to conduct pre-strike reconnaissance prior to the actual attack – one of them signaled back that the American fleet was indeed at Pearl Harbor. It served throughout the Pacific war, for coastal patrols, strikes against navigation, liaison, officer transports, castaway rescues, and a variety of other missions, and ended the war performing kamikaze missions. Amazingly, eight examples were operated by the French Navy Air Force during the First Indochina War from 1945-1947!
