PROFESSOR GIUSEPPE BESSIHe was one of the most important representatives of Italian salon sculpture. In his works he combined forms of neoclassicism and art nouveau. Bessi was director of the Volterra Art School (1891-1910), where he taught until his death. This institution is considered the only school in the world for the art of alabaster and it is natural that it is found in the sculptor's hometown because near Volterra there are sites from which this material has been extracted and processed since at least the 6th century BC. Bessi's alabaster works were exhibited in important exhibitions, such as those at the Universal in Paris in 1900, the International Modern Decorative Art, held in Turin in1902, or the Universal in Saint Louis in 1904, also called the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. Awarded on several occasions, his works were very successful in the international art market.About the Opera Mignon.Ambroise Thomas's opera Mignon premiered at theOpéra-Comique in Paris in 1866. It was the most successful of Thomas's manyworks, with no fewer than 1,500 performances, more than 1,000 in Paris, beforethe end of the 19th century. The piece was almost entirely forgotten in the20th century. The plot of the work is taken from fragments of J.W. vonGoethe's novel Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, which other composers - FranzSchubert, Robert Schumann, Hugo Wolf - had already drawn on or would draw on inthe future. The libretto was the work of the then very famous librettists JulesBarbier and Michel Carré, authors of the libretto for Charles Gounod's Faust, inspired by Goethe's own play.Artist: Giuseppe BessiMeasurements:12" x 5" x 12 3/4" inches.Any Questions are Welcome!!!WWWMALUANTIQUESCOM
