Description: Very nicely bound copy of Aldus Manutius’ early edition of Statius complete with Manutius’ adjuration against plagiarism, the books of Statius’ work and the Orthographia. This has a leather binding with gilt decoration and lettering on the front, a mirrored decoration on the rear and florets in the bands on the spine as well as a wonderful turndown with a repeating trefoil design. Gorgeous vivid marbled endpapers in deep maroon and blue front and rear are background at the front for the bookplate of Jacob Stuart (Jacobus Stuart Baronettus Carolus) which looks to have been trimmed to a circle. Jacob Stuart would have been the child of Sir James Stuart of Canada who became a baronet of the United Kingdom in 1840. There is also writing across the top of the title page, quite faint. All three edges are gilt with some slight discoloration on the top edge. There is some foxing within most noticeable at the front pages and the occasional spot. Printed in single column in Greek and Latin in the famous italic font designed by Pietro Bembo. Some pencil notations on verso of ffep, browning to the papers due to age. “Statius: Venetiis: Aldus: MDII”: “Statii/Sylvaraum Libri Quinquennial/Thebaidos LIbri Duodecimal\ Achilleidos Duo”: Venice: Aldus Manutius: 1502RAREE1502HXZA
