Description: Original oil painting on canvas by Norwegian/American painter Alf Jorgen Stromsted (1898-1979). The painting is titled "After the Rain" and is a large town scene and mountainous landscape showing a group of people promenading around a central figure of a woman in a wide brimmed sun hat. It is hand signed and dated for 1944 by the artist at bottom right and it is framed in a vintage handmade frame that is probably the work of Heydenryk of New York. It is oil on canvas and measures 24 x 30 inches, with frame it is 32 x 38 inches. The frame has a few dings and scrapes commensurate with age. The painting has the expected craquelure and is in excellent condition although it would certainly brighten up with a good cleaning. The reverse shows a number of exhibition labels: one for Contemporary Arts Gallery, NY; two for the Carnegie Institute 1946 annual; and a third that has too many losses to identify the exhibition. Another large oil by Stromsted brought in over $6,000.US at an Oslo Norway art auction in 2008. Alf Jorgen Stromsted (1898-1979) was born in Loedingen, Norway. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1924 and became a citizen in 1930, having settled in Summit, NJ. Stromsted studied at the Norwegian Institute of Technology (E.E.) and at the Annot Art School in New York under the German Expressionist artist/teacher, Rudolf Jacobi. Stromsted exhibited his paintings at: the Society of Independent Artists, 1933-36, 1938, 1941-43; Salons of America, 1934-36; Corcoran Gallery biennials, 1939, 1941; Carnegie Institute, 1944-46; PAFA Ann., 1944-45, 1949; Pepsi-Cola, 1946; Portland Art Museum; Brooklyn Museum; Albright Art Gallery; Contemporary Art Gallery, NY, 1938 (solo); Municipal Art Gallery, NY; Stavanger Art Society, Norway; Museo Nationale, Rio de Janeiro; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Audubon Artists; Springfield MFA; Newark Museum; and the Montclair Art Museum. He was a director of the Society of Independent Artists, NYC (1941-43) and a member of the Summit Art Association, the Associated Artists of New Jersey and the Woodstock Artists Association. Stromsted is buried in Woodstock, NY. A painting by Stromsted is included in the permanent collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
