Description: THE ITEM FOR SALE IS AN IMPORTANT ANCIENT BYZANTINE BRONZE INTAGLIO BETROTHAL (MARRIAGE) RING, 4th-5th Century A.D. Byzantine betrothal ring, 4th-5th century AD. This ring would have been probably a wedding ring for a less affluent family. In its original state it would have had the appearance of solid gold. Its the same style as the gold Byzantine wedding ring held on the Metropolitan Museum Accession Number: L.2015.72.3, On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 301.A bronze ring with round plaque-form bezel engraved with two full-length figures flanking a cross, all with 4 dots to the border, and on a round shank. Its a beautiful ancient ring with angled band. UK finger size K 1/2, USA finger size 5 1/2.This is an extremely rare example of one of the earliest types of engagement/marriage rings. A very similar type gold ring can be found in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum Great dark age patina, fantastic in appearance.Fine condition. The ring can be polished to remove the patina and will then have the appearance of gold.
