Description: A fantastic looking pot with incised decoration and bird effigy handles. Described as pre Colombian by Tremont Auctions in Sudbury, MA. However the small jug that was as contained in the same lot was actually ancient Egyptian rather than pre Colombian. So I’m not positive about the attribution on this one. It could be pre Columbian, it could be Egyptian, it could be Native American. I really don’t know and extremely knowledgeable folks I’ve shown it too aren’t sure either. It does appear to have some age and does appear to be made by a more primitive culture. The base appears to show evidence of being set in soil for a very long time. The condition is excellent with just two small chips on one side of the pot. It oddly had two small holes put into the bottom rim before it was fired. I’m not sure what the point of these would have been. My guess would be so that cordage could be run through them. A hand applied incised design wraps around the top of the pot. It stands roughly 6.5” tall. The diameter of the top is around 3.75”. If you happen to know more about this piece by all means drop me a note. For now I’m selling it as mystery pot. It’s a great piece that looks excellent on display. That much is certain, even if it’s origin is not. It will ship ASAP! Thanks
