Ancient Pre-Columbian Clay Circle Stamp. Equador "Jama-Coaque" Culture. AACA

Description: ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONSArtifacts, Antiques & Fine Collectibles Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE This lovely pre-Columbian clay circle stamp was crafted by the Jama-Coaque people who lived on the Northern coast of Ecuador about 2,000 years ago—long before even the Inca warlords invaded their peaceful nation in about 1500. It is RARE to find such a small stamp like this one that shows much ancient use and material loss on the stamp's edge. The clay stamp was fired in one of the many kilns that have been uncovered by archeologists in Jama, Ecuador. This terracotta stamp measures about 1.6” (40 mm) tall and still is decorated with remnants of both black and ocher pigments, which were common colors the Jama-Coaque people used. It appears to have been made in a mold so as to be uniform in the diameter of the 1.4” (35 mm) circle it would make when used as a stamp to decorate cloth or other pieces of pottery with geometric patterns. The stamp's circular edge is jagged from ancient use. (please see photos) The Jama-Coaque culture of the Pacific coast on Ecuador is known for its bold, figurative ceramics. The artisans created large, molded statues of people adorned with appliques and used stamps like this one to create uniform circles on both pottery and cloth. The Jama-Coaque communities were skilled in creating ceramic pottery items as well, which again showed that they were a very sophisticated tribe. Many of the fine statues and bowls recovered from the sites is on display at the Jama Municipal Museum in the Manabi Province of Ecuador and in the United States at the Dumbarton Oaks Museum, the Walters Art Museum, and the MET. eBay Note According to information I received, I certify that this pre-Columbian artifact was collected before 1970.
