Description: The Life of John Marshall [SIGNED] Author: Beveridge, Albert J. Published: Boston and New York; Houghton Mifflin, Binding: Hardcover Condition: Near fine (please see full item description for details) Description: Standard Library Edition. Four volumes, uniformly bound at the Riverside Press in three quarter leather over cloth-covered boards, with spines in six gilt-ruled compartments, top edges gilt. A very near fine set with just a touch of scuffing to the leather, signed Faithfully, Albert J. Beveridge on a front blank. John Marshall (1755-1835) was a highly skilled attorney and statesman who served as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1801 to 1835. "Under his leadership the Supreme Court evolved into a far more powerful institution than it had been in 1801. It successfully assumed its peculiar function as the preeminent interpreter and guardian of the Constitution and as the arbiter of conflicts arising from the clash of federal and state sovereignties. In a series of notable opinions, Marshall construed the Constitution so as to give full effect to the enumerated powers conferred on the federal government and to the restraints and prohibitions placed on the state governments. He articulated a constitutional vision that in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries facilitated the creation of the mighty nation-state the United States became" (ANB). Beveridge's biography of Marshall, published between 1916 and 1919, won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography in 1920. Condition Descriptions Defined: We grade our books and dust jackets using the traditional language of the antiquarian book trade. In brief: Fine is the highest grade and means essentially as new, without visible faults or defects; Near Fine means approaching fine, but with one or more very minor defects or faults, which will be noted; Very Good means the book shows some general (but not too offensive) signs of wear and use, which will be noted; Good means the book is complete and intact, but has more wear or some internal markings. Any ex-library book will be graded no higher than Good, even if it is otherwise a very nice copy. Again, all flaws will be noted. We rarely offer any books in Fair or Poor condition, but if we do, the reasons for the grade will be evident from the photo(s) and description. Guarantee & Returns: All books are guaranteed as described and can be returned within 30 days for any reason. Please notify us in advance of any return.
