Thanks for visiting The Cuban Poster Gallery! Our price for this poster is $289 The Cuban Poster Gallery is thrilled to offer this extremely hard-to-find 2024 limited-edition Cuban screen-print that salutes an iconic 1971 ANGELA DAVIS poster that was designed by award-winning graphics artist FELIX BELTRAN (1938-2022), whose work can be found in 60 museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This Havana-made Pop Art poster, titled LIBERTAD PARA ANGELA DAVIS (Freedom for Angela Davis), expresses Cuba's solidarity for the feminist African American activist, author and scholar who was imprisoned in 1971 on gun-related charges. In 1972, after a worldwide "Free Angela Davis" campaign, Davis was acquitted of all charges. Angela Davis (born 1944) has spent most of her life as a professor on multiple campuses in the University of California system. The 2024 Cuban graphic in this listing comes from a portfolio of five silk-screened FELIX BELTRAN posters that was displayed at an extensive 2024 retrospective of Beltran's work at the prestigious Galeria Habana in the Cuban capital. The 1971 offset version of this poster was printed by the Department of Revolutionary Orientation, a propaganda arm of the Cuban Communist Party. (At the moment, the four other silkscreens from this 2024 portfolio are also available in our eBay Store. You can search in our eBay Store for these posters with the key words CUBAN Silkscreen by FELIX BELTRAN ) The 2024 silk-screened ANGELA DAVIS poster in this listing measures approximately 19.5 by 13.75 inches (49 by 35 cm). Only 75 copies of this poster were made for this edition, ensuring it will always be rare. The poster is numbered (#16 out of 75) and contains the dry stamp of the Rene Portocarrero art workshop, where it was screen-printed in Havana. Born in Havana in 1938, FELIX BELTRAN studied graphic art in New York City in the late 1950s and early 1960s, before returning to Havana, where he became a star of the graphic arts community as a designer, curator and university professor. He is considered one of the most prominent Cuban graphic artists during the 1960s and 1970s--the early years of the Cuban revolution. Beltran moved to Mexico City in the 1980s, where his career continued to flourish as a designer, professor and internationally known speaker. Beltran died in Mexico City in December 2022, just days before the opening of an exhibition in Madrid that celebrated his life's work. A large-format reproduction of the poster in this eBay listing was displayed at the exhibition, which was titled Felix Beltran: Visual Intelligence. Overall condition of this poster is good with minor imperfections such as scuffs and specks on the face of the graphic. These imperfections are barely visible in the photos we have posted of this silkscreen, which will display beautifully in a frame. (Each of the Felix Beltran posters we have acquired from this series have similar -- and minor -- imperfections, which are common on Cuba's handmade silk-screens.)
