The bands are crowded, lots of people are using high-power stations and smaller stations go unheard. This is the case with most days on which contests are on the air. The WARC Bands, which do not allow contesting, are an excellent alternative for the independent-minded ham radio operator. For us, 12 is the new 10 Meters, 17 the new 20, and 30 the new 40 Meters. These bands are generally quiet, sparsely populated and just as effective as the major bands. Thatâs the good news.The bad news is that there are not many antennas out there specifically engineered to focus on the WARC Bands. Thatâs why The Tech Prepper and I developed a WARC specific Linked End Fed Half Wave. A resonant EFHW antenna just for 12, 17 and 30 Meters. It deploys exactly like the regular 40/20/15/10 EFHW, but just for WARC Band operation. The primary wire is just over 16 feet long and resonant on 12 meters. Add a short extension and it is resonant on 17. Add a third and 30 Meters is available. Operators can link and unlink as needed for the specific band they wish to work. This No-Tune End Fed antenna comes complete and ready to use, no kits or assembly are needed. The only option operators need to add, if necessary or preferred, is a counterpoise. There is a plethora of information on End Fed Counterpoises available including AA5TB's phenomenal page.The EFHW, or "End Fed Half Wave", is, like all antennas, a compromise. The compromise here is that the antenna is extremely lightweight, adaptable, easy to erect and very, very stealthy but these characteristics are paid for with its efficiency and radiation properties. Nevertheless, it can be a very effective antenna system for SOTA, POTA, or Trail-Ready Antenna without the need for an antenna tuner. The antenna is exceptionally discreet so it can be appropriate for many HOA installations. Simply raise the far end of the antenna as high as possible, connect the ground or counterpoise and connect your coax and run it as Inverted L, this is how I use it. Other configurations can be used including Sloper, Vertical, long angle Zig Zags, "V"s and rhombic. Designed for portable use, but perfectly workable as a low power base station antenna, the matching unit is a 49:1 Fair-Rite 16MM Toroid with winding as shown in the schematic above, set into a custom 3D Printed case for added durability. The wire used is 22 AWG UL 1007 stranded wire which makes this antenna light, portable, flexible and easy to set up. The EFHW is somewhat directional, with radiation mostly running in-line with the antenna. I have used mine in a sloper configuration with the apex in the west and base and ground spike in the west and the results with 10 to 15 watts can be seen in the screenshots above. With this model added to my repertoire, I don't have to erect a dipole or worry about using a tuner if it is impractical or inconvenient.The antenna comes with a grounding spike that allows for grounding in the event a counterpoise is not used. Mounting points for ground wires are stainless steel and will not rust or corrode.
