Description: Presented is a wonderful quality, heavy weight 5 piece English sterling silver bowl set made by William Kerr Reid. The set includes one large serving bowl, or a centerpiece bowl, and four smaller bowls. The large serving bowl is raised up on four hoofed feet and has a handsome gold wash on the interior. The large bowl and the four individual bowls are each decorated with a beautiful band of hand chased, repoussé acorns and oak leaves around the base and swags around the rim. The raised decoration is exceptionally well done in high relief against a finely stippled background. The set has never been monogrammed or engraved. All five pieces are very well made and have great weight. All of the engraving and hand chased work on all five pieces are completely original and were done when the pieces were made. No work has been done after the fact. Each bowl is marked on the underside with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard’s head for London, the duty mark of King William IV’s head, and a maker’s mark of WKR for William Kerr Reid. The four smaller bowls are marked with the date letter "u" for the year 1835. The larger bowl is marked with the date letter "A" for the year 1836. These bowls are definitely a set and were made by the same maker at approximately the same time. The larger bowl could simply have been brought to the London assay office a week or a month, or even a day after they changed date letters. All of the bowls have a thick applied half round rim on the inside of the bowl. The largest of the bowls has two solder marks visible where the rim was applied. There is also a small line where the silver rim comes together. This is not a split as it does not go through to the outside of the bowl. This is all shown in the eleventh and twelfth photographs. All five bowls have some very light surface, but this is quite minor. Otherwise, the set is in excellent condition. There are no major dents, no other splits, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no other repairs. The large serving bowl measures 8 3/4 inches by 11 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches. The four smaller bowls measure 5 inches by 6 3/4 inches by 3 3/8 inches tall. The combined weight of the set is 2475.4 grams or 86.7 ounces. Quite substantial. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
