Description: ORIGINAL c1857 EDOUARD TRAVIES (1809-1869) 'L'EPICHE OU LE PIC VARIE (SPOTTED WOODPECKER)' HAND COLORED LITHOGRAPH This is really a wonderful original. I just acquired an incredible collection of 9 original ornithological prints by one of the French masters, Edouard Travies. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below. If you do your research on these prints, you will find that these prints are typically retailed at around $1000-$2000 a piece. I have decided to offer them for a fraction of that price. If you collect bird prints or works by Travies, make sure you check my store for the others I am offering. Happy to combine shipping for as many as you buy. This one is for the Spotted Woodpecker. A wonderful scene of the the bird pecking on a tree. These are the large folio lithographs with the image measuring 14 x 12 inches on sheet measuring 18 x 14 inches. Outstanding original color. Some minor spotting and some toning to the sheet but nothing too bad. I have not taken the prints out of the frame. Print is marked with all the publication information in the bottom with "Imp Lemercier a Paris", "Paris E Savary & Co. Place de Louvre" (company blindstamp right above printing of it), and "London, Publ by Gambart, Junin & Co. 25 Berners st Oxfd St". Also has the artist's signature in the plate. Framed in simple black wood frame that is complimentary and ready to hang. All the Travies are framed in the same frame so ready for a presentation of a few if you are interested in creating a presentation. Pictures are an excellent indication of condition. If you have any specific questions, please dont hesitate to ask. Add only $5 more for S&H&I for each additional print you purchase. Dont miss this opportunity. These are wonderful original 19th Century bird prints that dont come available often. Frame measures 18 3/4 x 14 3/4 inches. For those not familiar with the artist, his biography from askart reads: "Edouard Travies was born in Doullens, France in 1809. Throughout his career he concentrated on natural history subjects which he portrayed through watercolor and lithography, frequently lithographing his own work. Travies artwork was exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon between 1831 and 1866. While his ornithological drawings were considered to be some of the finest ever produced, Travies also illustrated other types of land and marine animals. He was among the earliest artists to place his natural history renderings in the context of the animal's natural habitat. Travies' original drawings were reproduced as both engravings and lithographs. When producing his own printed works, Travies always chose to use lithography, while other artists who made use of the drawings often opted for copper plate engravings. Engravings, mostly by Guyard Fournier, produced from his illustrations were featured in the Ornithology section of Georges Cuviers publication Le Regne Animal. His own greatest published work was Les Oiseaux Les Plus Remarquables par leurs formes et leurs couleurs, which was published simultaneously in Paris and London circa 1857. His illustrations describe the species of birds native to Central and South America, showing the birds in association with flowering plants indigenous to their habitats, such as orchids and passion flowers."
