Description: Free eBay listing template designed by dewiso.com Antique 1870's The Ingoldsby Legends 2 Volume SetThomas Ingoldsby This antique hardcover set of "The Ingoldsby Legends or Mirth and Marvels" by Thomas Ingoldsby was published sometime in the 1870's by Richard Bentley. This collection of myths, legends, ghost stories and poetry was based on real legend and mythology, but are mostly deliberately humorous parodies of medieval folklore and poetry. First printed in 1837 as a regular series in the magazine Bentley's Miscellany, these stories became immensely popular and were published in books beginning in the 1840's and well into the late 1800's. This 2 volume set, although undated, is believed to date from the late 1870's and is good shape for the age. The two volumes each measure 8" x 5 1/2" and are a little under 2" thick containing roughly 500 pages each. They are bound in full blue calf gilt with raised bands and gilt lines to the spine with the edges and endpapers marbled. They contain numerous engravings and black and white illustrations. There is some wear to the covers and spine but present well. The pages are free from rips, tears, writing or damage, but do have some minor spotting/soiling present in a few places. The pages are bright and clean and all text is legible with no missing pages. The binding is firm with no issues. A really nice looking set of books!BOOKENDS NOT INCLUDED!
