Description: This card is one of several that came from an estate. It is a beautiful, hand painted on celluloid with dainty calligraphy letters. The paint includes very rare (for the time) iridescent paint, made from fish scales - very scarce at the time. I am not sure how the card was made, but the edges appear die cut. It is definitely hand painted. The card is matte on the front, and shiny on the back. The colors are slightly darkened with age. The piece has no damage. It is about 4" tall, and 1 3/4" wide. It is a holy card that can function as a book mark for the recipient's Bible. I have other celluloid cards, so take a peek. This one isn't dated, but one of the others is dated 1903, and one dated 1909. It won't disappoint. Holy cards have been around since at least the 15th century. As the years have gone on, the cards became more elaborate. The Nuns and Friars in the monasteries often created hand made holy cards and scapulars as special "blessings" for special events and for patron Saints. I love the celluloid and paper lace cards. I have a nice collection, that I am selling. I have quite a few listed, and have more to go, so check back
