Description: About this item This beautiful antique 15" swung glass vase is an excellent example of early American pattern glass (EAPG) and is decorated with three rows of hexagons near the base and thin vertical ribs. Early American Pattern Glass (EAPG) was produced in America from the 1850s until around 1915. It was intended for everyday use by ordinary families who could not afford much more expensive brilliant cut glassware and crystalware. Manufacturers produced whole tableware sets in matching patterns, and competed to produce the most desirable and popular designs to entice customers to buy their products. Close to 1,000 different patterns were used in tableware sets over this period. Good condition EAPG pieces are now collectible, especially in North America. EAPG from a wide range of manufacturers was imported to Australia in the late 1800s to early 1900s for sale by department stores and mail order retailers. Surviving examples can still be found today - although they are much rarer here in Australia than in the USA. This pattern on this vase identifies it as the United States Glass Company's 16056 pattern which was introduced in 1904. It contains motifs that were used in their earlier 15078 'Manhattan' range from 1902, and the vase iscommonly referred to as the 'Manhattan vase'. They were made in 14" and 12" versions, although this one has stretched to almost 15" while being swung. An feature of this vase is that it glows yellow-green under UV light, which shows the glass contains manganese. Manganese was added to glass to improve its clarity and transparency, however its use died out from the mid-1910s to 20s when alternative chemicals started to be used. The yellow-green glow it produces is one of the methods used to help identify authentic pieces of EAPG from later reproductions. - EAPG 15" swung vase - U.S. Glass Company no. 16056 pattern - a.k.a. As can be expected with an item of this age there are fine scratches from wear on the glass surface, however these are few and can only be seen when the vase is closely inspected. There are a few small air bubbles in the glass. Please check the photographs carefully as they form part of the description of this item.
