Description: We go to estate sales regularly and come across a wide array of unique and rare items. We add to our growing online inventory daily. We pick up new items from all over the world and all over the US. We also have a growing customer wish list. If you'd like to, feel free to add us to your saved seller's list and let us know what you collect and/or need. We’d be honored to add you to our customer wish list. We ask what we consider to be a fair price for anything we sell and understand that our idea of a fair price may be someone else's 'that's too much' price. If that's the case, feel free to make us an offer and will consider it. We also have sales regularly, so check back often. There is always a Sale by TheBay! Now onto the item for sale. For sale is an antique 19th century doll carriage. We came across this doll carriage many years ago at an estate sale that had one of the largest doll collections we've ever seen. We were told it is a Joel Ellis carriage, but we're almost certain it was made by F.A. Whitney. We couldn't find any Joel Ellis examples online, but quite a few F.A. Whitney doll carriages. The wheels, vertical metal push handle supports and the metal doll carriage wood body supports were extremely similar to other examples, if not exactly similar in their design and look. Even the wood carriage body, folding sunshade, fabric interior and seat area were as close in design and appearance of other examples we found online. However, there is no company sitcker on the bottom which we saw on just about every example, but it very well may have come off at some point during its lifetime. We aren't experts, by any means, so we may be incorrect. Please review all pictures yourself and look at examples online and we trust you'll come to the same conclusion.Anyhow, this doll carriage isn't perfect of course, but these are so difficult to even come by that it is a perfect restoration candidate and is still very structurally solid and it rolls perfectly. The worst part is that the sunscreen is no longer attached to the carriage and the fabric clearly needs to be completely replaced. However, the folding frame is still very solid and functions perfectly. As you can see in the pictures above, the sunscreen is no longer attached to the doll carriage. It attached to roughly the middle of the carriage with what we trust were two screws. There were also two short posts, for lack of a better word, near the end of the carriage that the sunscreen rested on. The last picture above shows one of the resting posts, but the one on the other side was missing when we got this carriage. Another post could certainly be made by a qualified metal smith, or perhaps even obtained online, and the sunscreen can easily be reattached to the carriage. The inside of the doll carriage is still completely covered in the original fabric, but it obviously shows signs of its 100 +/- years of age. As you can see in the pictures above, the center of the bottom has a small compartment below the floor of the carriage. From the other F.A. Whitney examples we found online, this compartment originally had a square cover that was also covered in fabric, but there wasn't one when we got this carriage. As you can also see in the pictures above, there are a couple different style screws on the bottom of the carriage that attaches the metal hardware to the body. Obviously, some of the original round head screws were replaced with panhead screws at some point over this carriage's 100+ year life span. These screws could easily be replaced with appropriate age round head screws if desired. All in all, this doll carriage is in respectful condition and will hold a doll and can be pushed around since the wheels and all of the metal suspension hardware is still very solid and undamaged. The wood body of the doll carriage is also still very solid and you can still see some of the pinstriping on the sides. We assume it was repainted at some point given the drips you can see in the paint job. We'd think the company woudl've been more attentive to such imperfections. Obviously, the paint could be sanded down and redone if someone was looking to fully restore this doll carriage.SHIPPING NOTES: There are six screws holding the push handle on this doll carriage, as you can see in the pictures above. We are going to remove the handle so that it can be shipped in a smaller box to save some money on the shipping cost. We will screw the screws back in place after removing the handle. This doll carriage, with the handle detached, measures 16" wide by 23" long by 19 1/2" tall. It will be shipped in a heavy duty cardboard box that measures 21"W x 24"L x 20"T which is barely big enough for this carriage. We glue the top and bottom box flaps and put a thin piece of wood that we drill holes in and use thin rope to fasten the doll carriage in place so it doesn't move around during shipping. We trust the carriage will be fine during shipping, but it will be fully insured in the event it is mishandled. This doll carriage will require an oversized box which incurs a premium. However, eBay almost certainly will not factor in our shipping discount, so if it seems a bit high, feel free to message us your zip code and we will calculate a more accurate shippnig cost. This doll carriage weighs about 13 1/2 pounds and the will weigh about 24 pounds when packed for shipping via UPS Ground. Thanks for looking and God bless!
