Description: A beautiful 24” Long Face or Triste Jumeau size 11 doll offered by Snowdrift Antiques.Jumeau began producing their Bebe Triste in 1879. The head was designed by French sculptor Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse and are always simply marked with a number that represents the size. Jumeau introduced a new paperweight eye for this doll that replaced the spiraling with a squiggling that was more natural looking. The body is always composition with ball joints and is stamped Jumeau Medaille d’Or Paris. The serene and somber expression is a favorite among collectors of French bebes from this golden era. This Long Face Jumeau has a pressed bisque head and applied ears, the bisque has a gorgeous flesh tint. She is incised 11 at the nape of her neck. Her lovely face includes mesmerizing blue paperweight eyes, expressive eyelashes and brows, beautifully accented nostrils, softly blushed chubby cheeks, and a sweet closed mouth. She has pierced ears but no longer wears earrings; there are a few very small chips by the piercing holes from past earring wear. The head has a professionally restored/reinforced hairline that comes down approximately 1¼” from the rim on her forehead, see image 12. I could only see the repair when her head is lit from within. There is a small chip to the rim just behind her left ear, see image 9, and some rubs at the neck and where the wig was once glued on. She retains her original cork pate. Her light blond mohair wig is old, possibly original, and has long locks in back and a braid at the crown over soft curly bangs in front. This wig is very matted but the luxurious curls are clearly visible! The wig and pate are not attached to her head other than by the ties on her bonnet. She has the earlier body with 8 separate or loose ball joints at the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees; her wrists are straight/unjointed. The body does not appear to be repainted but there are some touch ups I noticed on the finger tips, see image 13. It is in excellent antique condition with only typical rubs and crazing, please refer to the pictures of her undressed. She was restrung at some point. The torso is stamped in back in blue ink: JUMEAU MEDAILLE D’OR PARIS.She wears a period outfit of vintage and antique fabrics and trims; it is newer than the doll but appears to have been made expertly for her. The coat is a pale aqua jacquard silk accented with coordinating cotton velvet at the cuffs and twist cord piping along the outer edge. The sleeveless dress has an aqua satin silk bodice attached to cream silk faille pleated skirt that has a lace overlay. There is a with pale aqua velvet band at the waist. It closes in back with snaps. Her antique underclothes consist of a cotton teddy with pantaloons, a separate underskirt, and a chemise. There are a few water mark stains, tears, and repairs to the underclothes. Her bonnet is a confection of antique lace gathered in rows and accented with pale aqua silk bows. Gathered fine netting accents the brim of the bonnet in front. The ties are the same pale aqua silk. Her antique brown leather shoes are adorned with blue ribbon rosettes and are marked 11 on the soles. A button is missing from each shoe so they do not close in front. She appears to have her original lacey cream knit socks.Overall, a lovely and oh so hard to find Long Face Jumeau doll at an affordable price given her reinforced hairline. The pictures are part of the description, please contact me with any questions, clarifications, or requests for additional pictures.Convenient 3 month layaway plan is available upon request. I will consider reasonable offers.
