ANTIQUE 4/4 BOHEMIAN TRADE VIOLIN - REPAIRED, RESTORED & UPDATED - CIRCA 1920

Description: Payment | Shipping ANTIQUE 4/4 BOHEMIAN TRADE VIOLIN - REPAIRED, RESTORED & UPDATED - CIRCA 1920 ANTIQUE 4/4 BOHEMIAN UNBRANDED TRADE VIOLIN - PROFESSIONALLY REPAIRED, RESTORED & UPDATED - CIRCA 1920 You are invited to purchase a very fine and quite beautiful antique handcrafted 4/4 (full size) Bohemian unbranded trade violin, which we have repaired, restored and updated (details below). The brown/reddish-orange spirit varnish finish on this violin is especially attractive (see images). Included with the violin is a very nice contemporary E. H. Roth padded hard case, a generic bow and some bow rosin. ESTIMATED ORIGIN OF VIOLIN, DATE OF MANUFACTURE, & RECENT PROVINANCE: As this violin is unlabeled, its exact origin and maker are uncertain. However, there is a hand written mark found inside the left f-hole which appears to be "ON" or "OA" (see labels image). In either case, I am unable to relate either alternative somewhat cryptic marks to any particular individual maker or violin workshop. One other less cryptic clue as to its origin is that the underside of the original tailpiece is engraved: "CZECHO - SLOVAKIA" (See image of underside of tailpiece). So, based solely on that latter clue, the origin of the instrument appears to be from the German - Czechoslovakian border region of Bohemia, which is a common source location for many antique/vintage trade violins. Dating the instrument is also problematic, but based on the tailpiece engraving and on the physical appearance and condition of the instrument itself as it was received by us, I would estimate that it likely dates from Circa 1920. This violin was obtained from a popular auction house based in Brooklyn Park, MN, which is located just northwest of the City of Minneapolis, MN. Inside the case, was an instrument cleaning cloth marked with the logo and trade name of the well known and respected musical instrument firm of Claire Givens Violins, Inc. (See close-up image of cloth). This firm is described as "Dealers, Makers & Restorers of Fine Violins, Violas, Cellos & Bows" and is based in Minneapolis, MN - not far from the auction house from which it was obtained. So it appears that this violin may have passed through the hands of the instrument technicians associated with this firm most likely in the recent past, possibly receiving a setup of new modern synthetic strings, new sound post and bridge or other treatment on behalf of its previous owner. KEY PHYSICAL FEATURES: * A warm, very attractive and even brown/reddish-orange spirit varnish. * Two piece flamed Maple back with ribs of highly flamed Maple to match the back (See close-up image of part of back plate). * Two piece Spruce top with grain pattern wider at edges narrowing towards the center (See close-up image of part of top plate) * Top plate has a relatively high arch. MEASUREMENTS: * Length Overall (Loa): 23.25" * Length of the body (LoB): 14.25" * Rib Height: 1 1/4" * Max Width of Upper Bout: 6.25" * Avg. Width at Waist or C-Bout: 4.25" * Max. Width of Lower Bout: 7.75" NATURE OF REAIRS, RESTORATION & MODERN REFIT: This antique violin was received in relatively fair to good physical condition and equipped with modern strings, but with a very small chin rest, which begged of replacement. A bridge was detached from the violin, but included in the case. The soundpost, which appeared to be relatively new, was found to be inside the violin body and properly placed. Also, upon receipt, we quickly noted that the rear of the bottom plate had the beginnings of a centerline seam crack. In addition, the top plate had some edge defects and a crack near the bottom of the left f-hole, which needed to be repaired (See image of violin before repair with arrows pointing to areas needing attention). Following is a summary of the actions taken to restore the violin to full playability: 1. The bottom plate was removed from the violin and the seam crack in the lower bout was cleaned and re-glued with Hide Glue. A new cleat was added inside the lower end of the plate to stabilize the crack and to prevent any future progression. We also noted that the bottom seam was cleated by the original maker (a good sign). However, we also took the opportunity to reduce the vertical profile of the original cleats as well as that of the newly added cleat (See image showing the internal repairs). 2. A crack in the lower area of the right f-hole in the top plate was cleaned, re-glued and cleated and a very thin hairline crack which was just beginning to form in the same area was glued and cleated (See image showing internal repairs). 3. All four corners of the violin were found to be without any blocks. So, all 4 corners were internally blocked (See image of internal repairs). 4. The original carved-in bass bar in the top plate was re-profiled and smoothed. 5. The upper end block was found to be loose at its base. It was re-glued using Hide Glue. 6. Turning attention to the top plate, damage to the tops of the lower two corners was repaired with new wood and a damaged area in the edge of the lower bout was also repaired with new wood. 7. A crack in the rib left of the end pin was repaired/re-glued. 8. Finally, to complete the needed repairs, the bottom plate was re-glued to the ribs using Hide Glue, some surficial damage to the top plate caused by the undersides of the tuners attached to the tailpiece was repaired, both the top and bottom plates were cleaned using JOHA Varnish Cleaner and touch-up varnish was applied to the above noted repairs to the top plate and ribs. 9. A new full-size Guarneri-style Ebony Chinrest was added to the violin to replace the very small chinrest that came with the violin. 10. The original nut, saddle, endpin, and Ebony tailpiece were retained and used on the restored violin. The original bridge and soundpost were fitted and adjusted for their respective proper positions. 11. The pegbox was fitted with new Wittner Finetune geared Pegs (Made in Germany). These geared pegs negate the need for fine tuners on the tailpiece as they are permanently set within the pegbox and have an 8:1 gear ratio, making for very precise tuning. Only the central knurled spool segment of the peg rotates so peg slippage is prevented. So once the Wittner pegs are set, they are not designed to be removed from the pegbox. (Please see the Wittner website for more details). NOTE: Conventional wood peg slippage is a big problem with most violins, something that a player definitely does not want to happen in the middle of a concert solo in front of a large audience. Wittner geared pegs totally eliminate peg slippage so one can play the violin even with vigor without worry. 12 Finally the original modern strings that came with the violin were installed to complete the setup of the instrument (See images). The violin now bears the repair label from our shop (see image of labels). All of the aforementioned repairs have resulted in a fully restored and functional antique Bohemian trade violin from circa 1920, but with some modern enhancements so the violin performs at its best with modern synthetic strings. Thus, an antique instrument that could have easily been lost to time has been improved and reborn to live a second life in the present. It is now ready for the next fine player, who could be you, to put it to use. SOUND AND PLAYABILITY: The sound of this restored violin can be best described as having a sound that is full, powerful and inviting with an excellent response off the strings. The bottom end has a rich, mature tone and the top end rings well, both clean and clear. The above noted repairs and upgrades have vastly improved the overall tonal response of the violin. HARD CASE: This violin will be shipped in a very nice contemporary E.H. Roth internally padded hard case that was received with the violin itself (See image). The estimated age of the case is Circa-1970. This case, which is in very good to excellent condition, will be very protective of the refurbished violin for shipping purposes and will likely be retained by its new owner to safely store and transport the violin. The violin will be very carefully packed so as to prevent any movement while in transit to its new owner. BOW/ROSIN/CLEANING CLOTH: Included with the violin is a very nice "generic" bow in good playable condition. Also included is some bow rosin. We will also include the Claire Givens Violins, Inc. cleaning cloth that came with the violin. PURCHASE: The Montana Logger is very pleased to offer this professionally repaired and restored Bohemian trade violin with case and bow for a very reasonable buy-it-now price. We will also entertain reasonable offers for this refurbished antique violin that dates from Circa 1920. PAYMENT: Payment is due within 3 days of purchase.
