Description: ANTIQUE 49 piece set ca.1897-1935 Christofle MARLY 1st series Silverplate flatware FRANCE, NO MONOGRAM Marly, named after a no-longer-standing pleasure palace built by Louis XIV outside Paris, has been one of the most detailed and ornate patterns in the Christofle’s catalog since it was created in 1897. The fine chasing is an exquisite example of Rocaille with its asymmetrical crawling plant and shell motifs. Each piece (except the knives) is marked "Christofle" along with Christofle’s second standard full mark, used from 1862 to 1935. This standard full oval mark contained in inside a square box has four stars, two capital "C" letters which mean Charles Christofle, between them there is a balance and a bee image in the center above two palm-like branches. The knives are also marked "Christofle" along with a diamond shaped mark inside a square box which appears to contain two capital "C" letters and the scales. This is also a very early mark used in the same time period. Christofle is the “Rolls Royce” of the silverplating technology and it is evident in this set of the complicated MARLY Christofle pattern. Finding a full set of early Christofle flatware is extremely rare…this is truly a piece of history! 49 total pieces, which include:12 large spoons - 8.46" (21.5 cm) and 3.52 ounces (100 grams) 12 large forks - 8.46" (21.5 cm) and 2.99 ounces (85 grams) 12 dessert knives - 8.26" (21 cm) and 2.32 ounces (66 grams) 12 dessert spoons - 7.48" (19 cm) and 2.25 ounces (64 grams) 1 ladle - 13.77" (35 cm) and 11.11 ounces (315 grams) Total weight is 9.14 pounds (4.150 kg) Great condition considering that they are over 100 years old! Dessert knives show their age more than the other sets (some surface spots which may or may not be cleanable but could be replated if necessary).
