Description: Antique solid 9ct gold Swan emblem brooch with 5 gemstones in a design representing the Southern Cross by H. Simonsen, Melbourne. Maker's bar attached with figural marks: - the maker's mark for H. Simonsen, 285 Little Collins St, Melbourne; -the number '9' for 9ct; and - a sheaf mark or quality guarantee (caratage). Marks in this form date the piece from 1889 - 1920. In good condition, all five original stones in gold settings, one setting has a neat repair due to two broken prong tips, clear glue used to retain the stone. A beautiful example of an Australian Federation period gold brooch or pin; also known as 'sweetheart' brooches from WW1. Johnson and Simonsen was a manufacturing jeweller and importer established in Swanson Street, Melbourne in 1895. Their mark was a combined 'set square and compass' with the guarantee marks of the Manufacturing Jewellers Association of Victoria. In 1914 the firm became H. Simonsen'. They moved to Bourke Street and finally to 25 Little Collins Street until 1927.
