Probably Italian or Spanish. Slanted hinged lid. Gilded and embossed leather surface over a wooden frame. Canted lid embossed with a central floral and foliage panel and the initials "S. S." Lower panels have the same foliate patterns with gilt borders. All original brass hardware, including the handle, hinges and lock mechanism. Interior lined with red velvet and gold fabric strips. Bottom lined with marbelized paper. CONDITION Overall excellent. Some surface wear and fading, consistent with age and use. Leather is very slightly lifted off the canted front surface in one small area (all visible in the images). A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL 300 +/- YEAR OLD KITCHEN ADORNMENT.
