Description: Antique beautifully carved wooden milk jug with leather handle. I purchased this in Brookline MA in the 1990's from a small shop that closed seasonally so the owner could go and buy more goods to import. I was told at the time of purchase that it was from the Masai tribe in Kenya and dated from the 1950's or 1960's, but I have no way of knowing if this is true. It was made out of a section of the trunk of a small tree, and is quite elegant and beautifully done, with walls mostly about 1/4 to 3/8 inch thick. It measures about 10 1/2 inches tall and 5 1/2 inches at the widest point. There are some very old cracks, which are probably the reason it was taken out of service long ago. Someone patched some of the cracks with a material that looks like wood putty. I suspect this was a dealer somewhere along the line, since it seems to be covered with a somewhat poorly matched stain (see last two photos). Despite this, I've always looked at it as a museum piece, a particularly nice example of this kind of carved vessel. I part with it now with mixed feelings, as part of a much-needed downsizing process where I'm prioritizing keeping artifacts that I actually collected personally in my travels.
