Description: Antique bronze sculpture of a seated couple of the Dogon Tribe of Mali - Dimensions are ; 6 13/16" high , with a base measurement of 4 7/8" wide X 1 3/4" . Material is bronze . Origin is the Dogon Tribe of Mali . This bronze sculpture from the African Dogon people of Mali is an amazing creation for a still largely primitive African tribe . They are indigenous to the central plateau region of Mali in Western Africa south of the Niger bend near the city of Bandiagara and the nation of Burkina Faso with a population estimated as between 400,000 - 800,000 , approximately 4% of Malis population of 20,000,000. Their language consists of roughly 120 dialects constituting an independent branch of the Niger-Congo group of languages , are not closely related to any other language and are not mutually comprehensible . Originally hunters , they have acquired and developed more agrarian skills . Their geographical isolation from much of the modern world has enabled them to maintain their cultural , religious and creative traditions although elements of Christianity and Islam have been integrated into their largely traditional African religion . This hefty little bronze of a seated Dogon couple is emblematic of their sculpture. A naked man and woman are squatting , his left arm around her shoulder and her right arm around his . He is holding a spear and wearing a pointed hat with a ball on top . She is sporting a 'Mohawk' type hairstyle . There are small and typical signs of surface wear on a piece with a fairly even , rich , dark bronze patina . We have priced this sculpture from the Dogon Tribe very reasonably .
