Description: Antique Catholic Christian Artwork Ulisse De Matteis in Magnificent Walnut Frame. The frame measures 17 3/4" wide and 17 1/2" high; it weighs 3 pounds 15 ounces. I looked at the art using a powerful magnifier and I see brush strokes, I am uncertain if these are early chromo type lithographs with hand applied highlights or if these are completely hand painted. They seem to be paintings based on stained glass church windows and depict angels. Both are signed lower corner by the artist. The frame is missing one small insert piece that apparently came loose (see photo 9) and is otherwise fine solid & sturdy condition, the 2 angels artworks are also quite fine with beautiful vivid colors. See the detailed photos. I guarantee this is a genuine 1880-1900 era item in original frame. The piece has great provenance. This item was from the estate of Lewis Buckley Stillwell 1863-1941 and Agnes Newhall Stillwell 1906-1957 & Richard W Stillwell 1899-1982 who were well known professors at Princeton University, in fact several generations of the Stillwell family included many who lectured at Princeton. I recently acquired many fine items from the Stillwell family estate at Plymouth MA. Ulisse De Matteis (Florence 1828–1910) founded his stained-glass workshop in Florence in 1859. He created stained-glass windows for many of the major cathedrals of Europe. Italian artist Ulisse de Matteis (1827-1910), who founded his stained glass business together with his brother Sergio and business partners Guiseppe Francini and Natale Bruschi in 1859 at 97 Via Guelfa in central Florence. These windows, executed in a distinctive Renaissance style, are prime examples of only a handful of works by the de Matteis workshop executed for clients in Britain. The only other de Matteis windows known to be in existence in the UK are those at All Hallows' Church, Harthill, in South Yorkshire, and at the Church of St Mary, Credenhill, in Herefordshire.
