Description: A very rare and beautifully painted late 19th century tile by the Ravesteijn factory in Utrecht, Netherlands. Probably purchased through the Thomas Elsley catalogue. The tile depicts scenes of an early 18th century riding school. Based on an 18th century copperplate engraving by J.E. Ridinger, which in turn was based on an earlier painting by E.M. Steinberger. Produced using pinprick designs which left a faint impression on the unfired tin glaze for the painter to use as a guide. The original pinprick design for this particular tile is preserved in the Rijksarchief (State Archive) in Leeuwarden. 15cm x 15cm Damaged. In 2 pieces. Missing corner. Missing glaze. Surface wear. Reclaimed/ salvaged. Crazing, spots, discolourations and other faults. Please check over the photos carefully.
