Description: ANTIQUE EARLY 19TH C. ITALIANATE MARQUETRY INLAY BOX W/CHERUBS, CHARIOTS & GOATS A lovely early 19th-century Italian-style marquetry inlay box made from fine layers of what appears to be well-figured burled maple, walnut, boxwood, and aspen and hand-finished in rubbing oil for your consideration. The front (top/recto) of the box bears an image of two cherubs racing chariots drawn by goats, with one chariot and its driver having had a spill. The technical virtuosity of execution is profound with expressive detail further enhanced in the marquetry with hand-inked detail -- quite stunning. The box measures 12cm square x 5,4cm in height. The attached photographs illustrate evidence of some expected warping and loss of some small bits as to be expected from a piece of this age. Some cracks and delamination are also evident. Overall, a beautiful piece showing some age but loaded with grace.
