Ernest Beaumont Born: 1871 - Yorkshire, EnglandDied: 1933 - Staten Island, New YorkKnown for: Marine, land-and cityscape paintingHe was born in Huddersfield in Yorkshire, England in 1871. As a young man, he joined the Blackpool police force, serving initially as a constable and advancing to the rank of inspector. After fifteen years in the police department, he retired and emigrated to the United States with his wife, Henrietta. Sources indicate that the Beaumonts settled in the U.S. in 1907. They subsequently purchased a home with Ernest's brother, Arthur. Records list their address as 112 Rhine Avenue in Staten Island, one of the five boroughs of New York City. The Beaumonts were a family of renowned artists. Ernest Beaumont's obituary in the New York Times described him as a "contracting painter and decorator." Who Was Who in American Art indicates that he painted two backgrounds for the Museum of the City of New York in 1932. Ernest's wife, Henrietta, was a member of the National Association of Women Artists. Arthur James, his brother, was perhaps the most famous of the Beaumont artistic line. Arthur J. Beaumont was a member of the influential St. Ives School of artists in England. He was the recipient of many prestigious awards, including the gold medal from the Academie Julian in 1905. Like his brother, Arthur was also a contract painter who designed large murals as well as stage sets for theater.Little is known about Ernest Beaumont's formal artistic training and affiliations. The quality of his work is evident and it is probable that he received some academic schooling in the arts. His brother, Arthur, studied in London under Julius Olsson (1864-1942) and in Paris at the Academie Julian under William Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905). His wife, Henrietta, studied in England with H. E. Locke and in the U.S. with Abraham J. Bogdanove (1888-1946), William L. Stevens (1888-1969), and Aldro T. Hibbard (1886-1972).Ernest Beaumont's work was very similar in style to that of his brother. He primarily painted seascapes and landscapes within New England and New York. Many of his surviving works depict colorful, impressionistic dock scenes in Gloucester and Rockport. Beaumont was a member of the American Watercolor Society founded in 1866.In January 1933, Ernest Beaumont passed away at his home in Staten Island at the age of sixty one after a brief illness. He was survived by his widow, Henrietta: two sons, Arthur and Frederick; and three daughters, Frances, Marjorie and Ethel Beaumont. At the time of his death, many of his artworks were left to what is now the Staten Island Museum.
