Description: This Rut Niblick was made by F H Ayers between1885 and1895. The head is heavy and has a small slightly oval face, which is 2 inches deep and 2.5 inches long. The hosel is thick and 4 inches long. The name F H Ayers is stamped in large block letters on the head. The grip is leather, well worn and typical of the age period. Rut / Track irons were made prior to 1850 and began to fade out around1885. In the mid 1880's , the Rut Niblic replaced the Rut Iron which was primarily made by blacksmiths. The Rut Niblick had a slightly larger head, shorter and less thick hosel, and a flat face, as opposed to the dished / concave face of the Rut Iron. The Rut Iron and the Rut Niblick were designed to scoop a ball out of a hole / rut caused by heavy wagons and similar objects. Thus the name "Rut Iron". The Rut Niblick was replaced by Niblick around 1900. The club head became considerably largerand used used to primarily loft the ball onto to the green.
