Description: This is an antique flint glass clear glass pitcher, with a double vine design, fine ribs, helmet shaped, applied handle, and ground and polished pontil. I believe this is the R.L. or ribbed/reeded leaf aka Bellflower pattern from McKee & Brothers, introduced in 1862. McKee & Brothers operated from 1853-1899 in Pennsylvania. While much of Bellflower was made by McKee, there were other firms involved. This piece appears to have the same appearance in McKee catalogs between 1862 and 1871. Credit to the excellent work of the great people behind the site eapgs.net for their research. The pitcher weighs in at 3 lbs 7.7 oz. It is 9" tall at the top of the handle 8 3/8" tall at the high point of the spout sides. The base is 4 1/8" in diameter. From edge of spout to handle edge, it is about 8" across. The Metropolitan Museum of Art made reproductions some decades back. Those are marked as such, and this piece is a original rare antique unmarked flint glass item. I will be very specific with the wear, possible damage, and manufacturing imperfections I see on this piece, but I invite you to look at all pictures for your purposes and to request more pictures if you want them. Overall this piece is in great antique condition. This pitcher shows the inclusions and bubbles typical of flint glass production of the time period. I fell a bit of roughness on the side of where the handle bottom piece is attached. I see straw marks or other manufacturing aspects in the handle top, I do not believe that is a crack. Going in a vertical line in the front side there is roughness and what feels like small chipping that can no be felt from the inside; it does not appear to be a crack, but perhaps from coming out of the mold originally. The base pontil is rough around the edges and the base has some small marks. On the handle and the clear upper part of the pitcher I see scratches here and there. Under black light this glows purple/blue. I would like to say I am not an expert on antique glass, just an avid aficionado and student constantly learning, so please conduct your own research. I also see other past and current listings identifying this as an 1840's Boston & Sandwich item; however from the research I conducted I believe it is McKee 1860s. Please see all pictures for condition and details. Enjoy!
