Description: Antique French Choisy-le-Roi Porcelain Plates, Signed and Numbered, ca 1863-1878, 6 pcs These six antique French porcelain plates bear the embossed number “6” and the impressed hallmark, “1/2 Porcelaine de Choisy-le-Roi. HB”, the maker’s mark used by the Faïenceries de Choisy-le-Roi during the period 1863-1878. The Faïenceries de Choisy-le-Roi, founded in 1804 in Choisy, near Paris, were bought in 1863 by Hippolyte Boulanger who gave his initials, “HB”, to the company’s mark. Boulanger enlarged the workshops, greatly increased production and twenty five years later moved the headquarters to the rue de Paradis in Paris. He employed professional illustrators for his printed faience, especially for the very fashionable series of “talking plates” (“assiettes parlantes”) that he produced. These particular plates shows various “scenes champêtres”, or pastoral scenes, in “grisaille” with characters and animals, each with an explanatory title underneath the image. A lovely violet colored border of geometric motifs surrounds the central image. These plates show different degrees of yellowing due to age and one plate has a chip on the back. These charming plates will bring a bit of 19th century French design into your decor and would be an excellent addition to your collection.
