Description: Here we offer an Antique French Majolica Pitcher from the Onnaing Factory in Northern France. The impressed #s 752 tell us this was made before 1890.The soldier sits on a barrel which has printed " Vive La Reduction des Periodes".Translated this means the soldier demands a reduction of the length of Military service. This was probably a reaction to the "Prussian Invasion of 1870" and even until after Post WWl.It was not uncommon to see a French soldier seeking donations by holding an Onnaing pitcher. This exact piece can be seen on page 79 in the book "Pichets en Barbotine" and again on page 7 of The Marvelous Majolica Reference & Price Guide (last photo). It has an estimated value of between $470-$515. It measures 10.5" tall by 4.75" and is in excellent condition with fantastic age related glaze crazing.
