Grandville (1803-1847) was born Jean Ignace Isidore Gerard in the city of Nancy of northern France. He contributed widely to French satirical magazines Le Charivari and La Caricature. He is also well known for his illustrations in the books of La Fontaine, Balzac, Hugo and Robinson Crusoe.
