Description: Antique Early Staffordshire Blue White Transferware Plate 9 5/8" Batalha Portugal Circa 1825-1830 This is a fine example of early transferware in excellent to mint condition. When I purchased the plate from an antique dealer, it was described as: ca. 1825-1830 in mint condition. Gently used with very few utensil marks. Beautiful glaze. Bright, clear blues and whites. No chips, cracks, or repairs. Width - about 9 5/8 inches. Maker unknown. Picturesque scene that looks like a garden party. Men and women are in the foreground with a dog. One woman is in Portuguese dress. Men with sheep are behind them. In the background is a large Gothic building that resembles a religious seminary structure. (See Petra Williams book on Staffordshire romantic patterns on p.195.) The Monastery of Batalha (Mosteiro da Batalha) is a Dominican convent in Batalha, Portugal. Originally, and officially, known as the Monastery of Saint Mary of the Victory (Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória), it was erected in commemoration of the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota and would serve as the burial church of the 15th-century Portuguese royalty, including Prince Henry the Navigator. It is one of the best and original examples of Late Gothic architecture in Portugal. Pictures may show camera flash. I usually ship within 1-2 days, but if USPS does not pick up packages, shipping will be delayed. Pictures are a part of the description. Smoke and pet free home. Will answer any questions.
