They were produced in Japan in the 1930s. Tokanabe Ware is typically black with hand-painted raised relief designs. The black finish on items in the 1800s was call Japanning, the look was perfect for the 1930s, when Japanese ware became popular again in the American home decor. The wall pockets have a smooth black finish and feature Japanese pagoda motifs with trees and rolling hill landscapes. The Japanese pagodas and trees are finished in gold and red. Each has "made in Japan" stamp on the back. There is small hole in the back of each one to facilitate hanging on the wall.
