Description: DESCRIPTION:A very fine piece of antique Japanese carved wood figure of a Seiobo attendant holding a fan. The garment is carved with fine details of various patterns. Areas such as face, hands, shoes, fan's pole & rim, are highlighted with “gold” color lacquer. It weights almost 18 oz & appears to be hardwood. From the worn areas on the edges & raised patterns showing a lighter color, indicates it was stained/ebonized. Back carved with inscription: 龜台金母童子也: Boy attendant of the Golden Mother of Kame-dai (Seiobo/Heavenly Mother) 東都: East Capital (Toto, now Tokyo) 住法: Priest-in-residence 橋一聲齋作: made in/by Hashi Issei Sai? I do not specialize in Japanese antiques. Based on the name “Toto” & the fine workmanship, most likely is 19th century. The color of the wood is dark-dark brown, not as “black” as shown. The “gold” color is more like patinated/oxidized/tarnished brass, not as gold-gold as shown. SIZE: Approx. 14.5 inches tall overall, or 9.25 inches tall for the figure alone without the fan. CONDITION: “Gold” lacquer chips, cracks, losses, rubs, wears etc. The biggest loss is on the forehead; Rest of the wood with usual minor/tiny age flaws such as nicks, flea bites, rubs, wears, scratches, tight hairlines, … etc. Mostly unnoticeable; Old repair on pole on back of the fan; Old glue residuals on base; Old label/tape residual on back above the inscription.
