Description: Antique Johnny Griffin Bronze/Brass Inkwell without Insert In the mid 1800's, and unknown artist painted the face of a young Black boy in warm soft colors. This artist immortalized the young boys face and became known as the "Young Black Boy with Torn Hat" or "Johnny Griffin." This beautiful & rare figural bronze inkwell depicts the folk character "Johnny Griffin" and most likely dates from the 1920-1930's. It features the head of the young man wearing a tattered hat. The hole in the hat serves as a pen holder. The back of Johnny's head is hinged. The inkwell is very well crafted in bronze with a lush dark patina and sculpted with deep detail in the young man's face and an almost Art Nouveau floral design near the bottom. Piece is signed with a CV on the bottom front. The underside has a raised serial number "4557". It measures 6" long x 3 1/4" wide at the bottom and stands 2 1/4" tall. Does not have pen or inkwell, but is a gorgeous piece of bronze work. Please see all photos for any wear and tear. (Wear & tear is common with vintage & antique items.)This inkwell is perfect for use or as a decorative piece for private inkwell collectors. Please note, this is additionally a Black Americana piece that would be perfect for use as an educational piece on art of the time.
