Description: I am pleased to be able to offer this rare, antique, large, African, hand carved, wood drum featuring a protective mother figure with her child with the drum head carved on the female's head and which has a stretched and nailed leather hide head which was used for ceremony among the Luba People of the Congo, Africa. This amazing Luba specimen measures 24 1/2 inches tall by 10 1/2 inches wide and has a circumference of 31 1/2 inches around the head of the drum and a matching circumference of 31 1/2 inches around the base of the statue. This Luba ceremony drum weighs 12 pounds. This antique Luba drum was bought from a African art collection and the previous owner added two small green felt pads and two small wooden "legs" or pegs to the bottom of the drum's base to create a better display. This museum quality Luba drum specimen is in great rustic tribally used condition but has cracking to the wood, minor nicks to the wood, the female figure has a very small chip of wood missing from the side of one ear, the child form has a very small hole on the top of the head to one side with a slight chip out of the wood, also evidence of tribal repairs. This drum is a collectible museum piece and is not for playing. This antique Luba wooden ceremonial drum would be a perfect addition to any African art collection.
