Description: ANTIQUE MASSACHUSETTS MAHOGANY DROPLEAF WORKTABLE WITH 3 DRAWERS & ROPE CARVED LEGS - BOSTON CA 1800Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this fantastic early 19th century antique Mahogany 3 drawer worktable. This is undoubtedly a Massachusetts table and is exemplary of the preeminent designs that were popular in Boston & the North Shore of Massachusetts during the late 18th century & early 19th century. The rope carved legs were well executed and were especially popular in & around Boston by prominent families who made their wealth at sea or by maritime trade. The top two drawers showcase concurrent cuts of crotch mahogany veneer creating a nice visual effect where the grain continues across the two drawers. The bottom drawer originally housed a sewing bag, but like many of these the silk bag has been lost to time and the third drawer was fitted with a panel. The brass pulls might be later additions, but if they were they were replaced early in the stand's life. The pulls have a floral design at the center and are much heavier and higher quality than any brasses available for sale today. The original locks and escutcheons are still present on the top two drawers, but this didn’t come to us with a key. The drawers have New England White Pine secondaries with hand cut dovetails and an old acquisition or collection number on the bottom of the top drawer's panel. The legs terminate with a dramatic flared ringlet turning and are capped with the original brass casters that still wheel around with ease. We really love the unique elliptical grain pattern on the top, and the drop leaves provide ample workspace when needed. These were generally used by the women of the house and especially so when they had the sewing bag to hold all of their ongoing projects. The stand is finished on all 4 sides and remains in very good condition with our only notes being minor surface wear and old slotted screws were added to the top at each corner. The stand measures 18 1/2” wide x 18” deep x 30 1/4” tall. When the leaves are locked up the tabletop measures 34 3/4” wide x 18” deep.
