For being 117 years old this Trapunto is in good condition. Shows signs of fading, missing thread lettering at top that read "In Memory Of My Cruise China Japan And Philippine Islands". Glass eye on Eagle is in good condition. Something may have been on bottom right and left hand corners. Sailor: Name of Sailor in the photo is Joe. He was writing to his mother and did not include his last name. (Photo #14 and #15) Description: President Teddy Roosevelt built a formative Navy and wanted to show it to the world. He sends 16 warships out to circumnavigate the world from Dec 16, 1907 to Feb 22, 1909. Great White Fleet was a nickname for a group of U.S. Naval Battleships that completed a journey around the globe. Ships earned their nickname for the stark white paint on its hulls. Fleets primary mission was to make friendly peace time courtesy visits to numerous countries while displaying U.S. Naval power to the world. During this time frame Sailors on liberty in Japan would order these for their families and or themselves in memory of their world peace time cruise.
