Description: What a rare, historical photo! This photo shows a group of native Americans waving goodbye (or hello) to children in a canoe with a Christian priest. You can very clearly see his black robe and cross in his hand. One of the young men in the canoe is well dressed, in English clothes, which leads me to believe he has been spending some time in an English school or possibly on his way to one. You can also see a teepee in the background as well as many natives in traditional clothing. The photo suggests this priest is either there in an attempt to convert them to Christianity or possibly to take their children to a Christian “Indian school”. The man we received this photo from did have a story and some background info on the photo. We have no way of verifying what he said, but we figured we would share. This man said he actually purchased these photos from a relative of the man who originally took them so many years ago. They had stayed in that family for 100 years before he acquired them. According to him, he still has 2 more photos from the same collection, taken at the same time, and was pretty clear he would not sell them to me. this photo was taken on the shore of Lake Erie sometime between 1880-1895 and that these were Iroquois Indians. When he purchased the photo some 30 years ago, it was in this frame but the backer was falling apart. His wife made the new (light blue) backer for the photo and put it back in the frame and he also had a new piece of glass cut for it. He has held on to these photos for so many years, and by luck I was able to convince him to turn loose of this one. This is probably the coolest Native American related photo I have ever had the chance to see in person. True piece of history.
