Built in the 1300s-1400s, it is the largest church in the city and has the status of a minor basilica. The church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The interior of the church is notable for many tombs and works of art that accumulated in the centuries after it was built. Within the church the heart of Italian neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova (1757-1822) is enshrined in a marble pyramid shaped monument. The structure and its statues were created by five of Canova’s students after the master’s death in 1822, based on a design which Canova himself had drafted for the tomb for the Venetian painter, Titian. The pyramid shape and other details are Masonic symbols - a nod to Canova’s Freemason membership. Only the sculptor’s heart is located within the monument. The artist’s right hand is preserved in the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice and the rest of his body is buried in his hometown of Possagno, in the Tempio Canoviano, a church that was built based on his designs. The marble figures represent ( from the left side of the monument ): " Genius " resting ( winged male figure, reclining ) by sculptor Giuseppe Fabris (1790-1860). Winged Lion ( a symbol of courage, strength and freedom ) by sculptor Rinaldo Rinaldi (1793-1873). Medallion relief ( bust of Canova above the doorway ) by sculptor Antonio Bosa (1780-1845). Veiled figure sculpture carrying an urn ( a symbol of Mystery , particularly the mystery of Life and Death ) by sculptor Bartolomeo Ferrari (1780-1844). Attendant to the Veiled figure, the Genietto ( a cupid type of figure, representing a lesser genius ), also by Rinaldo Rinaldi. Weeping figures, representing " Painting " and " Architecture ", by sculptor Luigi Zandomeneghi (1778-1850) Boys attending the weeping figures, sculpted by by Rinaldo Rinaldi.
