Description: Antique Rococo or Late Baroque Style Mirror w/ 2 steel sconces or candleholders. Here is what I found on my mirror. The Rococo or Late Baroque Style began around 1730. Rococo wall mirrors are charaterised by their heavy, ornate frames. The complex frames were sculptured in plaster and often gilded. Derived from 'Rocaille', which was originally a method of decorating using concrete, pebles and seashells, Rococo style uses natural forms like shells, and floral and leaf motifs. To the best of my knowledge from what I was told and through my weeks of research on this mirror, it was most likely handmade sometime in the mid to late 1800's. It was handed down from grandma to granddaughter for almost 2 centuries. I took it on pawn about 20 years ago. It was stored for about 10 years and hung on my wall for another 10. It weighs approx 8 pounds and is built very strong and sturdy just as the Rococo mirrors are supposed to be. I've found no defects in it other than normal wear and tiny scratches that is common for something this old.It could use a thorough cleaning. Its made with plaster and the sconces and leaf designs on the sconces are made of steel. It's finish is a rustic gilded silver/grey that glows a different shade in different lighting (beautiful). It has a steel up-to-date wall hanger on the back and a partial paper number on the back that tells me it was probably an auction item at one time. Not sure, but the mirror itself might have been professional replaced at one time because I don't think this mirror is made with mercury, but it could be. If you have other questions about this mirror, contact me and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you.
