Description: Set of four Kewpie Doll bowls, 5.25" diameter 1.25" deep. Each bowl is stamped with "Copyrighted Mrs. Rose O'Neill Wilson Kewpies." These are a true luxury edition of the playful, frolicking Kewpies, with hand-painted gold rims. (See last photo where things didn't quite line up.) The porcelain was manufactured by Z.S. & Co. of Bavaria. Quality of Zeh Scherzer products are comparable to Rosenthal or Hutschenreuther. The stamp dates these to no later than 1918! There is minuscule finish loss on a few of the kewpies. Porcelain still shiny, no cracks, no chips, no repairs, no tarnish to gold trim. The Kewpie characters were invented by Rose O'Neill and first appeared in a 1909 issue of "Ladies' Home Journal." They were later produced as bisque dolls in 1912. The characters were wildly popular in the early twentieth century, and are considered one of the first mass-marketed toys in the United States. At one time she was the highest-paid female illustrator in the world due to the success of the Kewpies. O'Neill also wrote several novels and books of poetry, and was active in women's suffrage.
