Description: Bertel Thorvaldsen Bisque Porcelain Sculptures John The Baptist sermon. Complete Set of 12 figures. Bertel Thorvaldsen original sculptures, Sermon of John the Baptist, was designed for pediment above the main entrance of the Vor Frue Kirke in Copenhagen. This small scale set of the original Thorvaldsen work was produced for only 5 years from 1865. It is very rare to find a complete set. John the Baptist centered at 17” Height. 11 separate sculptural figures spread sideward decreasing in size. The outer reclining figures at 6” Height and 11” Length. Each piece is marked B&G. An incised number, and the handwritten initial of the reproducing artist. Overall condition is excellent. John is missing his pointer finger, (which is a very common injury), reclining figure on far right has a broken toe, and one man is missing a wood walking stick. See photo #11, #12 This set belonged to my friend’s father, who was an antique dealer. It was transported from Europe in the 1970’s. His research and correspondence with Bing & Grondahl, as well as the Royal Copenhagen Museum will be included with a purchase of this set. There is fascinating historical documentation of this set being gifted to a missionary woman. At a later date, during the demolition of the missionary home, this set of sculptures were found hidden in the floor boards. It is impossible to represent the beauty and detail of these figures with just 12 photos. Please reach out if you have questions or would like additional photos.
