Description: We adore original early 19th century tinsel prints as they give an insight in to the interests and pastimes of our 19th century ancestors. With the instant sharing of information via the web and of course social media, we tend to forget that during past centuries, the printed word or picture really was the only form of spreading news of any description. Printed periodicals, magazines and prints allowed one to enjoy a favorite poem, actor, play or song without having to physically visit a theater or playhouse. This charming print were produced in England circa 1830. The engraving was published by John Fairburn (fl. 1789-1840) who was a Regency era printer and publisher of popular prints. He retailed, printed maps, charts and books for the general public from his London shop. At the bottom of the print we find his address listed as Minories, London.Tinsel prints could be purchased from your local theatrical print seller. The idea being that you could decorate your chosen hero or heroine of the stage from within the comfort of your own home. This really was considered an adult hobby as the choice of embellishments such as foil, spangles, silk, leather, feathers allowed for great individuality. Parts would be cut away from the print with a sharp knife, allowing one to slid in chosen treasures of silk or velvet from underneath. The whole effect is very pleasing and typical of the handy craft skills that were popular throughout the Georgian and early Victorian periods. One of a pair, each retailed individually. The print is titled ‘The Lowland Lassie’ which is a verse from The Highland Laddie, a song written by Scotland's most favorite poet/lyricist Robert Burns. The print is perfect for anyone who has a connection with Scotland, or anyone who has a passion for early 19th century prints and engravings. It also looks stunning displayed alongside early folk art and primitives.Measuring: Frame width 10 5/8 inch (27 cm) by height 12.5 inch (32 cm). Aperture width 3 5/8 inch (9 cm) by height 5.5 inch (14 cm).Condition: A little tired and weary. The print and mount are showing their age, but we rather think that this adds to the antique appeal. As clearly seen via our images there is some spotted age foxing to the mount. Some tonal surface wear to the paper. Light surface wear to the frame commensurate with age. ITEM ID:10478B
