Description: Antique Victorian Era Gilded Silver & Carved Sardonyx Cameo Festoon Necklace with Natural Seed Pearls. Here we have a really incredible Victorian era festoon necklace (ca. 1860-1880) crafted of gilded silver, natural seed pearls, and carved sardonyx. The necklace is composed of 12 individually carved sardonyx cameos interspersed with lengths of draping chain and natural seed pearls to create the festoon style made popular during the mid-to-late 1800s. Each cameo is carved to resemble a different individual, with only the largest main cameo depicting a Roman soldier, God, or emperor. Every other cameo features what we believe to be women in Victorian-era garb with up-done hair. The largest cameo also features a natural brown hue in some of the carving relief areas, showcasing the beautiful variation in the stone. Each cameo is set in a silver bezel setting with an open back. At one point, this necklace was likely entirely gilded to appear gold, however, the gold wash has worn away over the years. The necklace now is silver with a slight gold hue to it; chiefly on the chain sections. The antique necklace best fits a petite neck at just about 14" in wearable length. The necklace comes to a close at a box clasp disguised with a petite cameo of its own. Overall, the piece is in excellent condition considering its antiquity. There are no cracks or stress lines in the cameos. The pearls are all intact and appear to be original. The sections of chain remain unaltered and strong. The clasp holds well.
