Description: This Auction, for Your Consideration Ladies, and gentlemen, what you are looking at on display, for your consideration, is one Working Apple Macintosh LC 'Elsie' Protoype: This is a prototype of the first 'low cost' Mac model, that was sold widely to educational institutions. The case, as you can clearly see, lacks the silkscreen of production models, and lacks the embossed branding on its underside. In fact, the case has no markings on it, whatsoever, boldly shouting its prototype/pre-production status! Click Images to Enlarge To my knowledge, no other prototype Mac LC has surfaced to date, much less a complete, and working unit. This unit still has its original Apple hard drive, Power Supply, and the original Prototype ROM chips dated 6/19/90, four months prior to its release. I connected it to a monitor (from my old Quadra), and connected a keyboard and mouse; and on power-on I was greeted with the friendly 'Welcome' screen. (There were no bad chimes or system bombs.) The interior of this unit is remarkably clean, and as are all of the connectors. The case has a very slight tinge of age on it, which is typical of Apple's 'Platinum' plastic of this era. Here, you can easily spot the absence of the normal 'Macintosh LC' silkscreen on the front of the case! Inside, the logic board (mainboard) lacks a silkscreened part number, as this had not yet been assigned to the series. Truly, this is a unique specimen of a bygone era of Apple computers, and a treasure to any Apple collector! The specification for the LC was the first of its kind: An affordable color Mac, with a 16MHz 68020 processor, an internal HDD, and an optional Apple II Compatibility card, that would occupy the PDS (Processor Direct Slot), first introduced on the LC model; by which schools could connect an Apple II series 5.25" or 3.5" disk drive, and run Apple II software. It is a fun system, even today, and its successors (the LC II, LCIII, Centris, and Quadra series) were all quite successful. In fact, Apple continued to produce systems using this exact case design through to the PowerPC era, with the Performa 475 (in 1996). This style of case became known as the 'Pizza Box Mac', and it became ubiquitous in schools, businesses, and homes, across the USA, and around the world. At the time of its release, the contemporary Mac models were the all-in-one SE and Classic series, and the color Mac II series (IIsi, IIfx). The original price tag on the LC was USD$2,499; compared to US$999 for the Mac Classic, $2,999 for the IIsi, and a whopping US$8,699 for the IIfx! The LC was popular-enough to remain in production for three years, competing toe-to-toe with the IIsi, and it was still commonly in use in schools through the early 2000s. The Mac LC is capable of running Mac OS System 6 (v6.0.6), and System 7; through Mac OS 7.5.5. This auction is for the Prototype Mac LC System ONLY! Other accessories, and media photos are for the purpose of illustration, and demonstration. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All items are sold “as is” and all sales are FINAL.
