Description: Aramco and its world: Arabia and the Middle East Aramco 1981 HC A pocket in the back includes a folded map of "The Arabian Peninsula, a stylized view" by Don Thompson. "Over 550 illustrations, including photographs, maps, charts and drawings. Topographical maps delineate changing Middle Eastern world at vital points in its history from the 25th century B.C. to today. A color chart summarizes the chronology of Islamic history from the time of the Prophet Muhammad." Preface: Aramco and Its World had its origins in the late 1940s when Aramco (the Arabian American Oil Company) was moving through a period of tremendous growth and expansion in all aspects of its operations. This involved the rapid enlargement of Aramco's work force of many different nationalities and especially the growth of its American manpower, which increased threefold between 1945 and 1950. To provide these many hundreds of newcomers with basic information about the company and its place in the world oil industry, and to help them adjust to work and life in a strange land among a people whose language they did not understand and whose culture sometimes seemed almost incomprehensible, Aramco in January 1950 issued a series of five spiral-bound booklets with the general title Handbooks for American Employees. These booklets, though intended for the information and instruction of Aramco's own employees, attracted widespread interest outside the company and the demand for copies was so great that two years later, in January 1952, a revised hardbound edition was published that consisted of two volumes entitled Aramco and World Oil and The Arabia of Ibn Saud. A single-volume edition containing the same material, further revised, appeared in 1960 with the title Aramco Handbook. When a fourth edition was published in 1968, it was apparent that the book had become much more than a "handbook for employees," and accordingly it carried the additional subtitle Oil and the Middle East. This book may thus be considered the fifth edition of a work first published some thirty years ago, and it continues the trend away from the specific (a "handbook" designed for a particular group of Aramco employees) and toward the general. At the start of the 1950s, when the first Handbook appeared, most Westerners considered Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Middle East exotic and mysterious lands, and comprehensive, accurate, up-to-date books about the area were almost nonexistent. Today, although the Arab world has again assumed a pivotal role in world affairs, with a powerful day-to-day influence on the lives and fortunes of many millions of people in the West, it still remains in many ways a relatively unknown and insufficiently understood part of the world. Aramco and Its World is therefore no longer simply a handbook for employees of Aramco but, in this edition, can contribute to increased understanding of Saudi Arabia and the Middle East by a readership which now includes many with no direct connection with the Middle East, Arabia, or Aramco and some with little or no knowledge of Islam, the Arab world, or the oil industry - but with an interest in these things and a desire to learn something about some or all of them.
