Description: Architectural Drawing Rendering Strawbridge & Clothier 1983 Remodel 43x34 Architectural Drawing Rendering Strawbridge & Clothier 1983 Remodel 43x34 Click images to enlarge Description Original architectural concept elevation drawing rendering for the proposed 1983 remodel of the perfume section in the downtown Philadelphia Strawbridge & Clothier department store, pencil and ink on heavy trace paper, about 43 by 34 inches, in very good condition as there are light creases in the paper from being rolled up for years. The rendering shows the location of Estee Lauder, Clinique, Ultima II, and Lancombe next to existing jewelry. The rendering was drawn by Dan Morganelli and comes from a collection of architectural drawings by him that I acquired a few years ago. Typical of his work, he included human beings to indicate proportions. This particular drawing was done when he ran his own architectural firm in Irving, Texas. Morganelli began his career at Welton Becket in Los Angeles in the 1950s and was responsible for the design of department stores and their interiors for several decades. After stints as chief designer for Carter, Hawley, Hale and Neiman Marcus in the 1970s, he started his own firm with department store clients. Morganelli may well be the most influential designer of department store interiors in the United States in the last half of the twentieth century. The drawing is of great historical interest as the downtown Philadelphia store was the flagship store of Strawbridge & Clothier for over 100 years until urban department stores were being shut down as suburban stores opened and customers moved. The company was sold to May Company in 1996, then acquired by Macy's in 2005. Macy's closed the downtown store in 2006. The drawing will be sent rolled in a tube.
