Description: Argonauts of '49: History and Adventures of the Emigrant Companies From Massachusetts 1849-1850 Hardcover by Octavius Thorndike Howe, pub by Harvard University Press (1923 Second Printing). Blue hardcover with gilt lettering on spine (6.5x10”), 221 pgs, a few b&w ils/photos of sailing ships. …NO ISBN Describes activities of would-be miners and adventurers who organized in Massachusetts to join the 1849 gold rush in California. The Preface (second pic) is a good introduction to what's in the book. The actual book text descriptions of organizations and travel and so forth are considerably more interesting than the historian-speak in the preface. Binding is tight, though the spine is a smidge too wide for the book, so there's a small space between the front endpapers and the first page of the first gathering. Pages show age toning, but all are clean. Covers show some age darkening and edge wear, bumps to corners, but the gilt printing on the spine is still bright. The last 4 pictures show paper clip impressions in the front, the small space mentioned above, and what must be remnants of a label, or similar, stuck inside the back cover near the top. With all that, I still think this is a Very Good copy. Please see the pictures for more information about this book and the condition of this copy. ► We are thinning contents of our smoke-free, pet-free home. Books will be listed, plus toys including CCG and trading cards, fabric/wallpaper sample books, jigsaw puzzles, jewelry, household items and maybe some of my fishing and workshop stuff.
